The
Powassan "Mountain" provides hikers with a rare panoramic view of
the rift valley,
the South Bay of Lake Nipissing and the Cross Point, where the French River
begins. |
Welcome to Powassan Ontario, "The Friendly Town".
An Ojibway
word meaning "bend in the river".
Settlers established
this community
well over a century ago, and it has prospered ever since.
In 2001,
the independent
towns and township of Powassan, Trout Creek and South Himsworth, amalgamated
to form a brand new municipality.
A walk down Main Street, takes the visitor past a hardware store, a couple
of hairdressers, two pharmacies, a service station and a number of stores selling
everything from sporting goods to furniture and a LCBO.
A farmers’ market is held weekly during the summer and fall, right beside the beer store, where visitors can purchase a wide variety of items including
fresh garden produce, honey, home-baking, regional maple syrup, sausages and
many local crafts.
Powassan is located near Lake Nipissing as well as near a vast array of small
lakes, which offer excellent fishing, boating and beaches for swimming.
The surrounding area also offers many trails that are worth exploring.
Golfers have a choice of two wonderful golf courses and during the winter months, everyone
can enjoy the cross-country ski trails, the Ontario Snowmobile Trail system and ice fishing on nearby lakes.
